CTDOT is modernizing traffic signals across the state:

On July 21 and July 24, 2025, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced plans to upgrade traffic signal equipment at 49 intersections in southwest Connecticut (East Haven, Norwalk, Milford, Wallingford, etc.) and 11 intersections in northwest Connecticut (Ansonia, Torrington, Watertown, etc.).

These upgrades include pedestrian countdown signals, accessible crosswalk buttons, and updated sidewalk ramps—all reflecting a focus on safety enhancements which intersect with flagger-managed zones.

1. South Windsor police cruiser struck during traffic control duty
On July 8, 2025, a South Windsor police cruiser performing traffic control at Route 5 and South Satellite Road was struck in the afternoon—a reminder of the dangers present even for trained professionals managing live traffic zones.
2. Flagger hit by vehicle in Oxford work zone (2024 follow‑up)
Although not this year, this serious incident from October 22, 2024, remains relevant. A flagger working in Oxford was hit by a driver’s side mirror and transported to a hospital with minor injuries. This serves as a case study in work zone safety concerns.
